The Oatmeal started the “kitty convict project” to improve the stats of lost cats that are returned home, which is currently less than 5% in the US, compared to 26% in dogs.
It is proposed that indoor cats should wear an item of orange, be it a collar, a scarf or a party hat.
We think this is a great idea. Whenever we see a friendly kitty outside, we’re not sure if they live close by or are lost. This will definitively help return the escapees home.
The main issue we see with the kitty convict project is that sometimes collars fall off, so it’s not a complete guarantee that all indoor cats can be identified as such. Microchips are still the most reliable but it’s a shame that only vets have access to the scanners. We would like to see an app where anyone can scan the chips and identify whether a pet is lost.
