Cats exude calmness and relaxation, the same energy required for yoga, so a no-kill pet shelter – Homeward Bound combined the two at Yoga at Connie’s to benefit both people and cats.

Six adoptable adult cats attended the yoga class, freely roaming the studio. Whist some felines preferred watching from a distance, others such as Breezy enjoyed the attention and interacted with the attendees. “The ones that were really active really made the class a lot of fun,” Yoga teacher Connie Pease told The Dodo ; “They jumped on the students and kissed them.”

From that single session alone, more than $500 was raised, with one kitty even finding a forever home! Shelter volunteer Jeanette Skaluba who came up with the idea explained “A lot of people find shelters depressing, so they’re not inclined to visit. By taking the cats to something like a yoga class, people have the opportunity see and interact with them outside the shelter. It gives these cats exposure and shows their personality. I think people can envision these pets in their home easier because they’re outside the shelter.”

Due to its success, Connie and Jeanette will continue to provide such sessions to help shelter cats in need and encourage other Yoga studios to find some flexible felines to add to their list of students.
